Nero In The White House

Mr. Nixon and Clinton lied to save their backsides. Although, I would argue there are no plausible explanations for doing what they did, I could entertain arguments pursuant to understanding their rationales for lying. But in the case of Obama, he lies because he is a liar. He doesn’t only lie to cover his misdeeds – he lies to get his way. He lies to belittle others and to make himself look presentable at their expense. He lies about his faith, his associations, his mother, his father and his wife. Government-funded film critics do grotesque damage to freedom of speech.

I see the Obama campaign has redesigned the American flag, and very attractive it is too. Replacing the 50 stars of a federal republic is the single “O” logo symbolizing the great gaping maw of spendaholic centralization. And where the stripes used to be are a handful of red daubs, eerily mimicking the bloody finger streaks left on the pillars of the U.S. consulate in Benghazi as its staff were dragged out by a mob of savages to be tortured and killed. Character, Not Audacity

There were parts of his speech that raised the old expectations. I liked the emphasis he put not on himself but on the word “you” — the idea that change comes organically from the bottom up. I liked his extraordinary self-awareness, his willingness to admit that often life on the campaign trail requires candidates to do silly things. I liked the sense of citizenship that pervaded his address, the sense of mutual obligation.

But what I was mostly looking for were big proposals, big as health care was four years ago. I had spent the three previous days watching more than 80 convention speeches without hearing a single major policy proposal in any of them. I asked governors, mayors and legislators to name a significant law that they’d like to see President Obama pass in a second term. Not one could. It seems the liberal press is disappointed in the President's speech last night. (Always the danger after following Clinton. Just ask Rick Santorum after following the firebrand Hernam Cain in the Florida Straw polls.)

David Brooks is the first of many to speak out. For the first time the terrible fear is leaking into the room that perhaps Obama's vision is not what this country needs. Already seemly accepting the fact that this country is in debt, Brooks, Charlie Rose and other Democratic commentators are questioning Obama's ability to come up with a workable plan and the leadership to carry it out.

Whether they are ready to vote for Mitt Romney is another question. - DSMW

Channeling Herman Cain's Declaration

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator, (not a man, not an administration) with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government... This was the best part of Herman Cain's speeches. He always started them this way and the crowds went wild. Like he was quoting something new, giving permission in a way to a ballroom full of humanity thirsting for the consent of the governed, knowing in their hearts that their government has become destructive.

Standing there listening to Cain recite the Declaration I was reminded of these forgotten words and it was thrilling. I somehow felt I was breaking some law, listening and thinking about the possibility of standing up for my rights. To hear the words that Governments are instuted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed was something I had forgotten. To know that I could, along with everyone at the Hyatt, alter or abolish the government if it became destructive of my liberty. This was a secret power I wanted to think about and turn over in my mind. It was empowering. It was a way out.

Herman Cain reminded me that the current administration, the EPA, the Czars, TSA, the courts, did not have the final say about my freedom and liberty, I did. It was mine and I could change it I if it became destructive of these ends.

No matter what happens to Herman Cain he will be a hard act to follow, just ask Rick Santorum. When he had to follow one of Cain's Declaration speeches in Orlando he quipped he was going to fire his campaign manager. Cain's message that day will not be forgotten. It rang loud and clear. You have the final say as a country. You are in charge.

Does Obama Know the Difference between Great Britain and England?

It is gratifying to see President Barack Obama condemn the disgraceful storming of the British Embassy in Tehran by thugs acting at the behest of the Iranian regime. After all, Obama has been notoriously slow in the past to criticise the brutal actions of the Iranian government after initially extending the hand of friendship to it. But did he really need to make another embarrassing foreign policy gaffe while doing so?

In a press conference this evening, the president referred in stumbling fashion to the “English Embassy” in Iran instead of the British Embassy.
