New Jersey Cuts Workers’ Benefits

Mr. Christie, who last year became the first Republican elected to statewide office in New Jersey in 12 years, campaigned in part on a platform of cutbacks to government workers’ benefits. On Monday he said the pension system was “rife with abuse” and provided “benefits that are wildly out of proportion with the private sector.”

Late Monday evening, Republican Gov. Christopher Christie signed three bills that require all government employees to contribute, or contribute more, to the cost of their health-care insurance.
