Obama Born in Hawaii, But is Hawaii Legally a State?

Peter Suciu

Much has been made about whether Barack Hussein Obama was born in the United States. However, two greater issues remain.

First, let’s accept the birth certificate. Obama was born in the United States, in the State of Hawaii. But is this even a legal part of the United States? Currently, as Obama has spoken about the “Arab Spring” and letting individuals choose their own course and destiny, Obama has been silent on a greater fact… namely the legality of Hawaii as a state.

Technically it is not. In 1988, a study by the United States Justice Department concluded that Congress did not have the authority to annex Hawaii by joint resolution. The ersatz annexation was a cover for the military occupation of the Hawaiian Islands for purposes related to the Spanish American war.

So the independent island nation was annexed illegally by the United States. How it became a state is also one not typically told.

After World War II, Hawaii was placed on the list of non self-governing territories by the United Nations, with the United States as trustee, under Article 73.

Under Article 73 of the UN charter, the status of a territory can only be changed by a special vote, called a plebiscite, held among the inhabitants of the territory. That plebiscite is required to have three choices on the ballot. The first choice is to become a part of the trustee nation. In Hawaii’s case that meant to become a state. The second choice was to remain a territory. And the third choice, required by article 73 of the UN Charter, was the option for independence. For Hawaii, that meant no longer being a territory of the United States and returning to being an independent sovereign nation.Under Article 73 of the UN charter, the status of a territory can only be changed by a special vote, called a plebiscite, held among the inhabitants of the territory. In 1959 Hawaii’s plebiscite vote was held, and again, the United States government, which helped draft the resolution, changed the rules. The plebiscite ballot only had the choice between statehood and remaining a territory. No option for independence appeared on the ballot as was required under the UN charter. Cheated out of their independence yet again, Hawaiians voted for the lesser of two evils and became the 50th state.

According to the recently released birth certificate, in 1963 Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii to Ann Dunham and a Muslim Kenyan national Barak Hussein Obama, Sr.

This takes us to our second issue, regardless of where Barack Obama was born; he was exactly raised as the typical American. His parents divorced when he was two years old, and when he was six years old his mother married Lolo Soetoro, a Muslim from Indonesia. He lived for four years in Indonesia, from age six to age 10. Very little has made of this point, namely that our President did not exactly have the typical American upbringing. Why this issue hasn’t been addressed in the mainstream media or during the election is a mystery.

The fact is that as a child Obama was raised by a mother who was known to have a radical past. While it could be said that this has made him more “worldly,” we cannot help but ask what impact this had on Obama’s view of America.

Little too has been made of the fact that Hussein Onyango Obama, Barack Obama’s paternal grandfather spent six months in Kamiti Prison on charges of political sedition and for membership of a banned organization. A former member of the King’s African Rifles, a colonial force of the British Army, Onyango Obama was later charged for sedition. Onyango reportedly had ties to insurgents and during his time in prison he was violently tortured by the British. This experience left Onyango bitterly anti-British.

Much of this has been dismissed that none of this effected Obama or shaped his character. Yet consider that Barak Obama maintain ties to other radicals throughout his life. Bill Ayers and his wife Bernadine Dohrn were members of the radical SDS (Students for a Democratic Socity), and that Obama maintained ties to Rev. Jeremiah Wright, an alleged “race-baiting, American-cursing pastor,” who offered a sermon titled The Audacity of Hope.

So regardless of the birth certificate, is President Obama really one who embraces the American way of life? These are questions that we must ask when judging the character of the most powerful man in America.
