President al-Assad credits Syria stability to being closely linked to the beliefs of the Syrian people. He owes this to his recent alliances with Iran and the militant organization Hamas and Hezbollah. These alliances have opened the door to influence Lebanon, the Palestine territories and Iraq.

Mr. al-Assad said he has sought closer ties to the U.S. but his alliance with Iran is crucial to his country.

“Nobody can overlook Iran, whether you like it or not,” Mr. Assad said.
