
The US has rocketed past Italy for the most coronavirus deaths.
By Saturday, the US had logged more than 19,400 deaths, with more than 500,000 confirmed cases of the virus, according to Johns Hopkins University, which is tracking the virus globally.
Italy has 18,849 coronavirus-related deaths, with 147, 577 people infected with the virus. The grim climb in deaths in Italy has slowed as Italians are preparing to reopen their country after more than two months in lockdown.
On Friday US authorities recorded the highest number of single-day deaths in the country, with 2,056 people dead from COVID-19 complications, according to statistics compiled by The Washington Post.
New York State’s virus death toll has reached 8,627.
