LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony entered the NBA together in 2003 and have become fast friends over the years, despite their rivalry.
They played on two Olympic gold medal teams together and, along with fellow superstar friends Dwyane Wade and Chris Paul, have vacationed together as the infamous Banana Boat Crew.
With the NBA on pause due to the coronavirus pandemic, Anthony shared a funny story during an Instagram Live segment hosted by Wade on Friday. Wade’s wife, Gabrielle Union, pressed the two to tell followers the untold story of how James saved Anthony from being swept away by the current in the ocean.
Anthony began explaining the story of how they jumped off their boat to swim to a grotto where Anthony spent some extra time to watch the barracudas. Then, unexpectedly, the current began to take Anthony further and further away from the boat.
“We couldn’t even see you!” Wade chimed in, snickering.
“It was windy and all types of (expletive) was going through my head. I look up at the boat and I see ‘Bron jump off the boat like he’s MacGyver,” Anthony said. “He jumped off the boat into the water. He was bringing me back with one arm. He’s swimming with one arm and he’s carrying me with the other arm.”
“Yo, Bron, I appreciate that. You saved my life that day. Them little flippers wasn’t working for me.”
Wade jokingly compared James’ swimming prowess to this Nike commercial.
Anthony, Wade, James and Paul famously took a trip to the Bahamas together in 2015 where the latter three were photographed on a banana boat. It’s unclear if this was the trip where James came to the rescue.
