While on the government dole, Congress has been giving out customary fourth quarter bonuses totaling 6.7million or 31% higher than the prior quarters. Lawmakers have a longstanding tradition of rewarding their employees with extra cash courtesy of taxpayers. 96 lawmakers took advantage of the taxpayer money when they chose not to return funds to the treasury and pay employees instead when their offices were closed. Some employees had taken leaves of absences to work on the legislator’s campaigns. Jim Marchall (D. Ga.) who closed his office and is now teaching at Princeton has this to say;
Marshall’s 4th quarter employee salary increase was up 125% before closure of his office.
