Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders has broken his silence after his friend and country music icon Garth Brooks sparked fervor for wearing his #20 jersey during a concert in Detroit, Michigan, on Saturday.
Several folks on social media went into a frenzy this week after mistakenly assuming Brooks’ “Sanders” jersey was an endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). So, the NFL great took the opportunity to jokingly capitalize on the situation with a tongue-in-cheek offer to his famous supporter.
What did Sanders say?
In reaction to a social media post that read, “Facebook forgot who Barry Sanders is and is freaking out at Garth Brooks for wearing a jersey and I’m dying,” Sanders tweeted, “Hey @garthbrooks, want to be my VP?”
Brooks replied, “Hey @BarrySanders I would run any race with you! #Number20for2020 HA!!! love you pal, g”
The Detroit Lions weighed in, too, posting an image of Sanders in his jersey next to a goat mascot (signifying Greatest of All Time) and the words, “Barry 2020.” The team tweeted, “He’s got our vote.”
Friday was the first time Sanders or Brooks offered public reactions after days of both supporters and critics of Bernie Sanders blowing up social media over the assumption that Brooks was a “Bernie Bro.”
But no one in Detroit appeared to make that mistake, especially since Brooks made it clear to his 70,000 fans congregated at the Ford Center that he was honoring Barry Sanders. Brooks told the audience, “Can I just tell ya that you guys got the greatest player in NFL history in my opinion.”
